How fast is the new VIA Rail fleet? ›

*While the new corridor fleet is able to travel at a speed of up to 201 km/h the current maximum speed allowed for passenger trains in Canada, which is determined by the Class of Track on which these trains operate, is 160km/h (100mph).

Before the Trip

It's best to arrive at the station half an hour before departure for travel within the Corridor, and one hour before departure for long distance trains.

VIA Rail trains' top speeds vary depending on the route and the type of train. In the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor, which is the most heavily traveled and where their high-speed trains operate, trains can reach speeds up to 100 mph (160 km/h).

The high-speed train travels at 79 mph between Brightline's five south Florida stations, while it maxes out at 130 mph for sections of the journey between West Palm Beach and Orlando. Brightline currently operates between Miami and Orlando.

While the engines are capable of 110 miles per hour (180 km/h), the track limits the maximum speed to 79 miles per hour (127 km/h). The Rail Runner officially went into service on July 14, 2006, serving the Downtown Albuquerque, Los Ranchos, and Sandoval County stations.

Currently, VIA Rail trains in the corridor can travel up to 160 kilometres per hour (km/h), with operating speeds of 60-120 km/h depending on the segment.
