Three-time American League MVP, 11-time All-Star and 2012 A.L. Rookie of the Year Mike Trout is scheduled to begin a Major League rehab assignment with the Salt Lake Bees beginning on Tuesday, July 23 at Smith’s Ballpark.

Salt Lake opens a six-game series with the El Paso Chihuahuas on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday with a 1:05 scheduled start on Sunday. Fireworks are scheduled after the games on Wednesday and Saturday. Tickets are available at www.slbees.com. MLB injury rehab assignments are subject to change or end without notice.

Trout last appeared in a Bees uniform in 2012, appearing in 20 games, hitting .403 with four doubles, five triples and one home run before being called up by the Angels and winning the 2012 Rookie of the Year Award. The Angels outfielder had 10 home runs and six stolen bases in the first 29 games of the season before undergoing surgery on his left knee on May 3.

RSL falls to Colorado in Rocky Mountain Cup finale

Real Salt Lake fell to regional rival Colorado Rapids, 3-2 on Saturday night, losing control of the Rocky Mountain Cup in a non-Covid year for the first time since 2015.

RSL winger Andrés Gómez scored his 12th and 13th goals of the year, his fourth multi-goal game of the season, to move into a tie for fifth in the MLS Golden Boot race.

On a rainy night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, Real Salt Lake came out flying to take an early lead in the 9th minute.

Bryan Oviedo found Andrés Gómez alone in Rapids territory. Gómez took two touches before launching a low, bouncing rocket at Colorado goalkeeper Zack Steffen’s near post, the technique and power of his right-footed shot proving too much as it whistled into the back of the net.

But the tables quickly turned as it would be Colorado that scored in lightning-quick back-to-back fashion in the 34th and 39th minutes to seize control of the Cup, with Jonathan Lewis and Sam Vines the scorers.

Heading into the locker room, Pablo Mastroeni’s side was dominant in every statistic except the scoreline, owning more than two-thirds of possession and more than doubling Colorado in passing (359-147).

During the halftime break, lightning strikes in the area postponed play for nearly two hours before play resumed at 10:21 p.m. local time.

It wouldn’t take long for RSL to square the affair in the second half, Gómez collecting his 13th of the 2024 campaign and second of the match with a beautiful left-footed strike in the 49th minute.

Gómez’ outside-the-box strike continues his nearly unbelievable run of form, marking his 13th goal in the last 140 days after he scored just once in his first calendar year with the club.

The match would remain on equal footing, both teams struggling through adverse conditions until Colorado won a late penalty kick on a controversial handball call in the 85th minute. Cole Bassett stepped up to convert the chance and give the Rapids the decisive 3-2 lead.

Despite the scoreline, RSL dominated the run of play, boasting 62% of the possession and nearly doubling Colorado in passes completed (609-327). Nine RSL players registered at least 30 passes, Justen Glad leading the way in volume with a staggering 99 while Braian Ojeda and Bryan Oviedo led in accuracy at 95% and 92%, respectively.

The loss gives Colorado its first Rocky Mountain Cup title since the disputed 2020 affair, just its sixth in the 20-year history of the rivalry. RSL still holds a commanding lead in the all-time Cup standings, winning 14 total and six of the last eight.

A bright spot for RSL was that Glad made his first start since June 1, returning from a six-week injury hiatus, playing the full 90 minutes.

Additionally, Real Salt Lake fans got their first look at attacking midfielder Benji Michel, the 26-year-old former U.S. youth international making his Club debut after being signed earlier this week. Michel most recently played for Portuguese side Arouca and previously made 119 appearances across all competitions, scoring 19 goals and nine assists for Orlando City FC from 2019-2022.

Realt Salt Lake () now gets more than a week off before returning to action to face Atlas in the Leagues Cup at America First Field in Sandy on Aug. 1 at 7 p.m.

Royals lose at Seattle in Summer Cup opener

Utah Royals FC kicked off the inaugural NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup with a narrow 1-2 defeat away against Seattle Reign at Lumen Field on Friday.

In the second meeting between the teams in as many weeks — the first being a 1-1 draw back on July 9 where Ally Sentnor scored a breathtaking individual effort — winger Cameron Tucker scored URFC’s sole goal in the contest to cancel out Olivia Athens’ opener for the hosts, with an assured, confident finish off a rebounded shot from inside the penalty area.

In the Royals’ second game under new interim coach, Jimmy Coenraets, the team delivered yet another brave, promising performance in the face of notable absences of several starters such as USA U-20 Captain and NWSL Rookie of the Year candidate Sentnor, veteran Amandine Henry, Macey Fraser and Ify Onumonu, all away on Olympic international duty.

The Royals featured a brave new innovative tactical approach in the game that helped the team dominate the central areas for the majority of the first half and much of the second, finishing the game with more possession, as well as more shots and passes (52% possession, 11 total shots, and 407 passes).

Tucker’s equalizer in the 45th minute represented the 25-year-old’s second goal for URFC this year, now making her the team’s joint second top scorer alongside Kate Del Fava, and one behind Sentnor who remains the team’s top scorer with three goals this year.

Rookie Cristina Roque also made her Royals and NWSL debut in goal in place of world-class goalkeeper Mandy Haught, who was rested for this match.

URFC on Wednesday also announced the signings of three National Team Replacement players Ellie Boren, Danielle O’Brien, and Shaelan Murison, who all also made their Royals debuts in the game, all coming in as late-minute substitutes as the Royals chased a late equalizer.

The Royals return home to continue its inaugural NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup campaign with their next game against Portland Thorns at America First Field on Saturday, July 27. Kickoff for this contest is scheduled for 8 p.m. MT.
